Amlodipine Induced Gingival Hyperplasia

Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker. Because of its long acting effect it is being widely used as antihypertensive drug. Gingival hyperplasia is one of its side effects. The histological and clinical evidences were consistent with amlodipine-induced gingival hyperplasia. The aim of publishing this report is to draw the attention of dentists towards this adverse effect.

Amlodipine‐induced gingival enlargement

The three most common classes of medications implicated in drug-induced gum enlargement are anticonvulsives, calcineurin inhibitors, and calcium channel blockers. Treatment primarily consists of withdrawing the offending agent whenever possible, in addition to maintaining good oral hygiene. Gingivectomy or flap surgery may be needed in resistant cases.

Gingival hyperplasia can occur during use of drugs such as diphenylhydantoin, cyclosporine and nifedipine. We report, three cases of gingival hyperplasia induced by amlodipine, a second generation calcium channel blocker. Exact cause of induction of thehyperplasia is not known. Individual variation in metabolism of the drug may be a factor.
